Description

The Photo Reviews for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized Media Library File Deletion in all versions up to, and including, 1.2.31. This is due to the `delete_reviews_image()` function's `delete_comment` hook trusting attachment IDs supplied via the `wcpr_image_upload_id` POST parameter that were stored in comment meta without any ownership or capability check β€” `viwcpr_filter_review_image_ids()` verifies only that each submitted ID refers to an attachment post type, not that the submitter uploaded or owns it. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to permanently delete any WordPress media library attachment β€” including its files on disk as recorded by `wp_delete_attachment()` β€” by embedding attacker-chosen attachment IDs into a review comment, then waiting for a moderator to remove the review or for WordPress core's `wp_scheduled_delete` cron to purge it after `EMPTY_TRASH_DAYS`. The nonce required to submit the parameter (`wcpr_image_upload`) is a shared public value printed on every product page for guest commenters and does not function as an authentication barrier, making this trivially exploitable without any account.

Executive Summary

The Photo Reviews for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress has a flaw in its delete_reviews_image() function. It allows unauthenticated attackers to delete any media file from the WordPress site by submitting a review comment with a manipulated attachment ID. The plugin does not verify if the user owns or has permission to delete the file, only that it is an attachment. This can lead to permanent deletion of media files on the server.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized media deletions in WordPress logs or review comments containing wcpr_image_upload_id parameters. Inspect WordPress cron jobs for wp_scheduled_delete tasks. Review plugin files for delete_reviews_image() function usage in the Photo Reviews for WooCommerce plugin up to version 1.2.31.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to delete important media files from your WordPress site, including images, documents, or other attachments. This could disrupt your website's functionality, remove customer reviews, or cause data loss. The attack requires no authentication, making it easy for attackers to target vulnerable sites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA if it results in the deletion of personal data or protected health information stored in media files. Unauthorized deletion of such data may violate regulations requiring data integrity and protection. Affected organizations could face legal penalties or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Photo Reviews for WooCommerce plugin to the latest version beyond 1.2.31. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is unavailable. Monitor media library for unexpected file deletions and review comments for suspicious attachment IDs.
