Description

The FeedWordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting in versions up to, and including, 2026.0517 via syndicated RSS/Atom feed content. The plugin's SyndicatedPost::sanitize_content() function only strips the 'target' attribute (the lines that would strip 'style' and 'on[a-z]+' event-handler attributes are commented out), and SyndicatedPost::insert_post() deliberately removes WordPress's wp_filter_kses and wp_filter_post_kses filters from content_save_pre before persisting imported feed items via wp_insert_post(). This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers who control an external feed that a site has already subscribed to to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Executive Summary

The FeedWordPress plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 2026.0517. The issue occurs because the plugin's sanitization function only removes the 'target' attribute and leaves other dangerous attributes like 'style' and event handlers (e.g., 'onload') unfiltered. Additionally, the plugin disables WordPress's built-in content filtering before saving imported feed items, allowing attackers who control an external feed to inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users access the infected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using FeedWordPress plugin versions up to 2026.0517. Check for unauthorized script injections in syndicated RSS/Atom feed content. Review posts for unexpected scripts or attributes like 'on[a-z]+' in HTML tags. Use WordPress admin to verify plugin version and inspect feed sources for malicious content.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site via compromised RSS/Atom feeds. If your site subscribes to an attacker-controlled feed, visitors to your site could have their sessions hijacked, credentials stolen, or be redirected to malicious websites. It may also lead to defacement of your site or unauthorized actions performed on behalf of users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing user data to attackers. GDPR requires protecting user data and reporting breaches within 72 hours, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A successful XSS attack may result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, triggering legal and regulatory penalties for failing to maintain adequate security controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the FeedWordPress plugin to the latest version to patch the vulnerability. If an update is not available, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until a fix is released. Review and remove any suspicious syndicated feeds that may have been added to your WordPress site.
