Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authorization bypass in Formbricks before version 4.9.0. It allows authenticated owners or managers of any organization to manipulate resources belonging to other organizations by supplying a victim's resource IDs along with their own organization identifier. The flaw exists in server actions like resetSurveyAction and updateSegmentAction, which fail to verify resource ownership against the supplied organizationId.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Formbricks instance is running a version before 4.9.0. Use commands like 'npm list formbricks' or inspect the version in the admin panel. Review server logs for unauthorized actions such as survey resets or segment modifications from unexpected organization IDs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with valid credentials could delete survey responses, modify segments and quotas, or alter pending invitations belonging to other organizations. This could lead to data loss, unauthorized changes to survey configurations, or disruption of invitation processes.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and modification of sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's access controls. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance violations due to insufficient authorization checks.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Formbricks to version 4.9.0 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to sensitive actions like resetSurveyAction and updateSegmentAction by implementing stricter authorization checks or disabling them temporarily.
