Description

Papermerge Core through 3.5.3 contains a missing authorization vulnerability that allows authenticated users to manipulate other users' pages because page management and OCR endpoints skip has_node_perm checks. Attackers knowing page UUIDs can call /pages/, /pages/move, or /pages/extract to rotate, delete, or extract victims' pages, and trigger OCR via /tasks/ocr.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-110622 is a missing authorization vulnerability in Papermerge Core through version 3.5.3. Authenticated users can manipulate other users' pages because page management and OCR endpoints skip required permission checks. Attackers knowing page UUIDs can call /pages/, /pages/move, or /pages/extract to rotate, delete, or extract victims' pages, and trigger OCR via /tasks/ocr.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized access to Papermerge endpoints like /pages/, /pages/move, /pages/extract, and /tasks/ocr. Monitor logs for unusual page operations or OCR tasks initiated by non-admin users. Review user permissions and document ownership changes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could delete, rotate, or extract your document pages without permission. They could also trigger OCR processing on your documents, potentially exposing sensitive content. This could lead to data loss, unauthorized modifications, or information disclosure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by enabling unauthorized access to or modification of personal data. For HIPAA, it risks exposing protected health information through unauthorized document manipulation. Compliance requires ensuring only authorized users can access or alter sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade Papermerge-core to a version that includes the authorization checks (e.g., commit 6ad2836 or later).
  • Apply the patch from commit 6ad2836 to enforce has_node_perm() checks in affected endpoints.
  • Review and restrict user permissions to ensure only authorized users can access document operations.
