Executive Summary

ClipBucket v5 through 5.5.3-#206 has a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the admin_area/language_settings.php file. The issue occurs via the unencoded edit_language GET parameter, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts into a hidden input field. When an administrator with basic_settings permission clicks a crafted link, the payload executes within the admin panel's origin.

Detection Guidance

To detect this reflected XSS vulnerability in ClipBucket v5 through 5.5.3-#206, inspect network traffic for requests to admin_area/language_settings.php with the edit_language parameter. Look for unencoded or improperly sanitized input reflected in responses. Use browser developer tools to check if the edit_language parameter value appears in hidden input fields without proper HTML encoding.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could perform actions on behalf of victims, access sensitive information, modify displayed content, conduct phishing attacks, or compromise higher-privileged admin sessions. Successful exploitation requires tricking an admin into clicking a malicious link.

Compliance Impact

This reflected XSS vulnerability could allow attackers to execute malicious scripts in the context of an administrator's session, potentially leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data. This may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) by enabling unauthorized data access or modification.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ClipBucket to the latest patched version or apply the fix from PR #939 on GitHub. Ensure input validation and output encoding are applied to the edit_language parameter in language_settings.php. Implement a Content Security Policy (CSP) to mitigate XSS impact. Restrict admin permissions to only necessary users.
