Executive Summary

ClipBucket v5 through 5.5.3-#206 has a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in admin_area/index.php. Attackers can inject HTML via the 'val' parameter when 'mode=add_todo' is used. This allows malicious scripts to execute in the admin panel origin if a logged-in administrator submits a crafted POST form without CSRF protection.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect ClipBucket admin_area/index.php for improper input handling in the 'val' parameter when mode=add_todo. Check if user input is reflected without sanitization or encoding. Review server logs for suspicious POST requests to admin_area/index.php with mode=add_todo and unusual 'val' values.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick an admin into submitting a malicious form, leading to script execution in the admin panel. This may allow stealing session cookies, accessing sensitive data, modifying content, or performing unauthorized actions on behalf of the admin.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or exposure of sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply output encoding to user-supplied data in the 'val' parameter. Implement input validation to sanitize the 'val' parameter. Add a Content Security Policy (CSP) to restrict script execution. Update to the latest patched version if available. Monitor admin panel activity for unauthorized actions.
