Description

git-diff before 2.0.7 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute shell commands by supplying crafted strings to the gitDiff API. Attackers who control a diffed document string can embed $(cmd) or backtick substitutions that shelljs.exec evaluates, running commands with Node.js process privileges.

CWE-78 The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an OS command injection flaw in git-diff versions before 2.0.7. Attackers can execute arbitrary shell commands by injecting specially crafted strings into the gitDiff API. The issue occurs because the software fails to properly neutralize special elements used in OS commands, allowing attackers to embed commands within $(cmd) or backtick substitutions. These commands are then executed by shelljs.exec with the privileges of the Node.js process.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of git-diff using npm list git-diff or npm list -g git-diff. If the version is below 2.0.7, the system is vulnerable. Inspect application logs for unusual shell command execution patterns or unexpected $(cmd) or backtick substitutions in diffed document strings.

Impact Analysis

If you use a vulnerable version of git-diff, attackers who control a diffed document string could execute arbitrary shell commands on your system. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or system compromise, depending on the permissions of the Node.js process running the vulnerable code.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR or HIPAA. Organizations using vulnerable versions of git-diff risk non-compliance due to potential exposure of sensitive data or unauthorized system access.

Mitigation Strategies

Update git-diff to version 2.0.7 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, review and sanitize all inputs passed to the gitDiff API to remove $(cmd) or backtick patterns. Disable or restrict access to the gitDiff API if untrusted users can submit diffed documents.
