Description

@mborne/extract before 0.2.1 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying shell metacharacters in archivePath or targetDir options. Attackers controlling these values passed to extract() can inject commands into unquoted shelljs exec() strings in the unzip, 7z, tar-bz2 and gz extractors, running them with Node.js process privileges.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an OS command injection flaw in the @mborne/extract library versions before 0.2.1. Attackers can execute arbitrary commands by injecting shell metacharacters into the archivePath or targetDir options. The issue occurs because user-controlled paths are passed unsafely into shelljs exec() calls within extractors like unzip, 7z, tar-bz2, and gz.

Detection Guidance

Check if your system uses @mborne/extract versions before 0.2.1 by inspecting package.json or running npm list @mborne/extract. Look for extract() calls with user-controlled archivePath or targetDir parameters. Review extractor files (unzip.js, 7z.js, gz.js, tar-bz2.js) for shelljs exec() usage with unquoted paths.

Impact Analysis

If you use a vulnerable version of @mborne/extract, attackers could run commands on your system with the same privileges as the Node.js process. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration. The impact is severe due to the high CVSS scores (9.3 v4.0, 9.8 v3.1).

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update @mborne/extract to version 0.2.1 or later immediately. Remove or replace any direct shell command execution in extractors. Validate and sanitize all user-provided paths before passing them to extract() functions.
