Description

@runnerty/executor-decompress through 3.1.1 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying crafted archive file names to compress_file. Attackers who can name a file dropped into a watched directory can inject $() substitutions or unquoted shell metacharacters into shelljs exec() calls, running commands with Runnerty process privileges.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-110641 is an OS command injection vulnerability in @runnerty/executor-decompress through version 3.1.1. Attackers can execute arbitrary commands by supplying malicious archive file names containing shell metacharacters or $() substitutions. These inputs are passed to shelljs exec() calls, allowing command execution with the privileges of the Runnerty process.

Detection Guidance

Check for vulnerable versions of @runnerty/executor-decompress by running: npm list @runnerty/executor-decompress. If version <=3.1.1 is installed, the system is potentially vulnerable. Inspect directories monitored by Runnerty for files with malicious names like x$(touch canary.txt) or containing shell metacharacters.

Impact Analysis

If you use @runnerty/executor-decompress up to version 3.1.1, an attacker who can name a file in a watched directory could execute commands on your system with the same privileges as the Runnerty process. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration depending on the process permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable versions may face compliance violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade @runnerty/executor-decompress to the latest version beyond 3.1.1 immediately. Remove or restrict write access to directories monitored by Runnerty to prevent malicious file drops. Monitor for unexpected command execution or file creation in system logs.
