Description

transcribe2texts through 1.0.6 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying crafted audioPath values to transcribeAudio(). Attackers can inject $() or backtick substitution or a closing quote into the unescaped path passed to child_process.exec() to run commands with Node.js process privileges.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an OS command injection flaw in the transcribe2texts package versions up to 1.0.6. The transcribeAudio() function passes an unescaped audioPath parameter directly to child_process.exec() in Node.js, allowing attackers to inject commands via $() or backtick substitution or by closing quotes. This enables arbitrary command execution with the Node.js process privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check if the transcribe2texts package version 1.0.6 or earlier is installed using npm list transcribe2texts. Inspect the code for use of child_process.exec() in the transcribeAudio function. Look for unsanitized audioPath parameters that could allow command injection via $() or backticks.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to run arbitrary commands on your system with the same privileges as the Node.js application. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration depending on the application's environment and permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows arbitrary command execution with Node.js process privileges, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. For GDPR, this may result in violations of data integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it could expose protected health information to unauthorized parties, violating security and privacy rules.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to version 1.0.7 or later of transcribe2texts to apply the fix replacing exec with execFile. If upgrading is not possible, disable the transcribeAudio function or restrict access to the application until patched. Monitor for unusual command execution patterns in logs.
