Description

nodejs-whisper through 0.3.1 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in convertToWavType() that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying crafted audio file paths. Attackers can provide file names containing $() command substitution or closing quotes, which are interpolated into an ffmpeg command run via shelljs exec(), executing OS commands with Node.js process privileges.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-110644 is an OS command injection vulnerability in the nodejs-whisper library through version 0.3.1. The flaw exists in the convertToWavType() function, which uses shelljs.exec() to run an ffmpeg command. User-supplied file paths are directly interpolated into the command without proper escaping, allowing attackers to inject malicious commands via crafted paths containing $() or quotes.

Detection Guidance

Check for unusual processes running after processing audio files. Look for files with crafted names like inp" ; touch PWNED ; ".mp3 in directories where nodejs-whisper is used. Monitor logs for ffmpeg commands with suspicious arguments.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands with the privileges of the Node.js process. An attacker could upload a file with a malicious name (e.g., inp" ; rm -rf / ; .mp3) to trigger command execution when the file is processed. This could lead to system compromise, data theft, or further attacks on the host.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to potential exposure of sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade nodejs-whisper to a patched version where shelljs.exec() is replaced with execFileSync() and file paths are handled as data. If upgrading is not possible, restrict file paths to trusted directories and sanitize inputs to remove shell metacharacters.
