CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL injection flaw in cemtan sar2html version 4.0.0. It occurs in the index() function of sar2html.py where the 'sort' parameter is directly used in a raw SQL query without sanitization. Attackers can manipulate this parameter to inject malicious SQL code, potentially accessing or modifying database contents. The issue is exploitable remotely without authentication.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if you are running cemtan sar2html version 4.0.0. Test the 'sort' parameter in GET requests to the root endpoint (/) by injecting SQL payloads like ' OR 1=1 --. If the server responds differently than expected, SQL injection may be possible.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the database backend. This could lead to unauthorized data access, data manipulation, or deletion. Since no authentication is required, any user with network access to the vulnerable service can exploit it.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access risks. GDPR mandates protection against data breaches, while HIPAA requires safeguards for protected health information. Exploiting this flaw could result in unauthorized data exposure, leading to regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade sar2html to a patched version if available. If no patch exists, disable or remove the application. Implement input validation and use parameterized queries for the 'sort' parameter. Monitor network traffic for suspicious SQL injection attempts.
