Type Confusion in Cpanel::JSON::XS Perl Module

Description

Cpanel::JSON::XS versions from 4.33 before 4.80 for Perl miss duplicate non-ASCII bare keys, allowing type confusion under dupkeys_as_arrayref in decode_hv. With allow_barekey, which relaxed enables, a bare key containing a non-ASCII byte is stored as UTF-8 but looked up as raw bytes, so a repeated key escapes the duplicate-key check and replaces the earlier value. From 4.41, under dupkeys_as_arrayref, a bare repeat replaces the array that collects a key's values with a plain value, and the next quoted repeat pushes onto that value as if it were an array. A JSON integer there is dereferenced as a pointer. Untrusted JSON decoded with relaxed and dupkeys_as_arrayref can crash the process or dereference an address chosen by a JSON number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Cpanel::JSON::XS for Perl versions 4.33 to 4.80. It involves improper handling of duplicate non-ASCII bare keys in JSON decoding. When enabled, the dupkeys_as_arrayref feature allows a repeated key to bypass duplicate checks by storing the key as UTF-8 but looking it up as raw bytes. This can lead to type confusion, where an array of values is replaced by a plain value, causing crashes or memory corruption if untrusted JSON is processed.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected versions of Cpanel::JSON::XS with relaxed JSON parsing enabled, an attacker could craft malicious JSON input containing duplicate non-ASCII keys. This could crash your application or allow arbitrary memory access, potentially leading to code execution or denial of service. Systems processing untrusted JSON inputs are at higher risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by enabling denial-of-service attacks or unauthorized data access if exploited. GDPR requires protecting personal data processing systems, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information systems. A crash or memory corruption could disrupt services or expose sensitive data, potentially violating these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Cpanel::JSON::XS to version 4.80 or later to address the duplicate non-ASCII bare keys issue. The patch modifies the decode_hv function to properly handle UTF-8 bare duplicate keys and prevent memory corruption or crashes.
