Description

The GeoDirectory – WP Business Directory Plugin and Classified Listings Directory plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'post_content' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.8.191 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the attacker to own a published listing, as the ownership check in GeoDir_Post_Data::can_edit() limits who can store the payload; however, because ajax_save_post() re-applies the existing post_status, edits to an already-published listing bypass re-moderation and remain live immediately.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'post_content' parameter. The issue arises due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 2.8.191.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the GeoDirectory plugin versions up to 2.8.191. Inspect stored posts or listings for unusual script content in the post_content parameter. Review user roles with subscriber access or higher for unauthorized edits to published listings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject scripts that execute when users access infected pages. This may lead to unauthorized actions on behalf of users, data theft, or defacement of the website. The attack requires the attacker to own a published listing, but edits to existing listings bypass moderation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, compromising user data and violating privacy regulations like GDPR or HIPAA. Unauthorized script execution may result in unauthorized access to sensitive information, triggering compliance violations and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the GeoDirectory plugin to the latest version beyond 2.8.191. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access to prevent unauthorized edits. Monitor published listings for unexpected script injections and review moderation workflows.
