Description

The RSS Aggregator by Feedzy – Feed to Post, Autoblogging, News & YouTube Video Feeds Aggregator plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'media:group/media:description (XML element in the imported feed)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.12 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires an administrator to configure a Feed-to-Post import pointing at an attacker-controlled feed URL and trigger the import via the Run Now action or setup wizard, which is the plugin's standard configuration flow.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the RSS Aggregator by Feedzy WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages by exploiting insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'media:group/media:description' XML element of imported feeds. The attack requires an administrator to configure a feed import from an attacker-controlled URL and trigger the import manually.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugins for Feedzy versions up to 5.2.12. Inspect imported feeds for malicious XML elements like media:group/media:description. Review server logs for unusual script injections in pages generated by the plugin.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary web scripts in your WordPress site whenever users access an infected page. This could lead to unauthorized actions on behalf of users, data theft, or defacement of your website. The impact depends on the privileges of the affected users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, which may violate GDPR or HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. If exploited, it could result in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive information, potentially leading to regulatory penalties, fines, or legal consequences depending on the data involved.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Feedzy plugin to the latest version beyond 5.2.12. Disable the Feed-to-Post import feature if not needed. Restrict access to the WordPress admin dashboard. Monitor pages generated by the plugin for unexpected scripts.
