Description

Janus WebRTC Server through 1.4.3 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the Record&Play plugin that allows unauthenticated attackers to write files outside recordings_path via the record request filename. Attackers can supply filenames with path separators to create or truncate files ending in -audio.mjr, -video.mjr or -data.mjr anywhere the Janus process can write outside protected folders.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-110717 is a path traversal vulnerability in the Janus WebRTC Server's Record&Play plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to write files outside the intended recordings directory by supplying filenames with path separators. This can create or overwrite files with specific extensions (-audio.mjr, -video.mjr, -data.mjr) anywhere the Janus process has write permissions.

Detection Guidance

Check Janus Gateway logs for suspicious record requests with filenames containing path traversal sequences like ../ or / in the Record&Play plugin. Inspect file creation outside the recordings_path directory, particularly files ending in -audio.mjr, -video.mjr, or -data.mjr. Monitor for unauthorized file writes in system directories like /tmp or /var.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized file manipulation, system compromise, or denial of service. Attackers could overwrite critical files, consume disk space, or disrupt services by creating files in sensitive locations. The impact includes low integrity and low availability due to file overwrites and resource exhaustion.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized file manipulation outside protected directories. Attackers could overwrite or create files in sensitive system locations, potentially exposing or corrupting data. GDPR requires protecting personal data integrity, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. Unauthorized file writes may lead to data breaches or integrity violations, risking non-compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Janus Gateway to a version beyond 1.4.3. Disable the Record&Play plugin if unused. Implement strict input validation to reject filenames with path separators. Restrict Janus process write permissions to only necessary directories. Enable authentication for the API if not already configured.
