Description

The AI Engine – The Chatbot, AI Framework & MCP for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Missing Authorization in all versions up to, and including, 3.8.6 This is due to the MCP module's OAuth 2.1 Dynamic Client Registration endpoint (/wp-json/mcp/v1/oauth/register) being registered with a permission_callback of __return_true, allowing an unauthenticated user to register an active OAuth client with an attacker-controlled redirect URI. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to obtain an administrator-bound MCP access token, and thereby full administrator-level control through the MCP tools (including user creation and option updates), once an administrator approves the attacker's client on the OAuth consent screen. The consent page is additionally served without X-Frame-Options or Content-Security-Policy frame-ancestors, so that approval can be obtained via clickjacking.

Executive Summary

The AI Engine – The Chatbot, AI Framework & MCP for WordPress plugin has a missing authorization vulnerability in versions up to 3.8.6. The MCP module's OAuth 2.1 Dynamic Client Registration endpoint is registered with a permission_callback of __return_true, allowing unauthenticated users to register an OAuth client with a malicious redirect URI. This enables attackers to obtain an administrator-bound MCP access token and gain full administrator-level control through MCP tools, including user creation and option updates, once an administrator approves the attacker's client.

Detection Guidance

Check if the MCP module's OAuth 2.1 Dynamic Client Registration endpoint is accessible at /wp-json/mcp/v1/oauth/register. Look for unauthorized OAuth client registrations or unexpected redirect URIs in logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full administrator access to a WordPress site, allowing them to create users, modify site settings, and perform other administrative actions. The vulnerability can be triggered via clickjacking due to missing X-Frame-Options and Content-Security-Policy headers on the OAuth consent screen.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Unauthorized administrative access may result in unauthorized data exposure, modification, or deletion, leading to compliance violations and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the AI Engine – MCP Server & AI Chatbot plugin to the latest version. Disable the MCP module if not needed. Restrict access to the /wp-json/mcp/v1/oauth/register endpoint via server configuration.
