Path Traversal in Apache SIS

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-110748, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-26

Last updated on: 2026-10-26

Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

This issue affects Apache SIS from version 0.7 through 1.6 inclusive. When a data file contains links to other files, Apache SIS opened these files regardless their paths. It was possible, for example, to specify a path to a local file. However, these files were always expected to be in some specific formats and the reading stops at the first parsing error, which makes this vulnerability unlikely to leak sensitive information. The impacted formats are: * Geographic Markup Language (GML) with `xlink:href` attributes for other files in GML format. * Well Known Text (WKT) with parameter elements for datum shift grids in NADCON, NTv2 or RGF93 formats. * Landsat scene with paths to files for each band in the GeoTIFF format. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.7, which fixes the issue by restricting the paths to the same directory as the file containing the references to other files, or to a predetermined directory for datum shift grids.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Apache SIS versions 0.7 through 1.6. When a data file contains links to other files, Apache SIS would open those files regardless of their paths, including local files. The vulnerability occurs because Apache SIS expects these linked files to be in specific formats and stops reading at the first parsing error, reducing the risk of sensitive information leakage.

Detection Guidance

Check Apache SIS version with command: 'java -jar sis-app-*.jar --version'. If version is between 0.7 and 1.6 inclusive, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by creating a data file with malicious links to local files. Apache SIS would attempt to open these files, potentially accessing sensitive data on the system. However, the impact is limited because reading stops at parsing errors.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache SIS to version 1.7 or later. This restricts file paths to the same directory as the referencing file or a predetermined directory for datum shift grids.
