Description

ILIAS before 9.24, 10.12, and 11.5 contains a PHP object injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users with Test creation or import permission to deserialize arbitrary objects via crafted Test archives. Attackers can inject a malicious tst_sequence sequence attribute that is passed to unserialize(), abusing Guzzle or Monolog gadget chains to write PHP files and execute code.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-110761 is a PHP object injection vulnerability in the ILIAS eLearning platform affecting versions before 9.24, 10.12, and 11.5. It allows authenticated users with Test creation or import permissions to deserialize arbitrary objects via crafted Test archives. Attackers exploit this by injecting a malicious tst_sequence attribute that is passed to unserialize(), enabling them to write PHP files and execute code using gadget chains like Guzzle or Monolog.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your ILIAS instance is running a vulnerable version (before 9.24, 10.12, or 11.5). Review logs for unusual test import activities or file writes. Inspect serialized data in test archives for malicious tst_sequence attributes. Use commands like grep to search for unserialize() calls in ILIAS code.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code on the server hosting ILIAS. If exploited, it could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or unauthorized access to sensitive information stored in the platform. Users with Test creation or import permissions are particularly at risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations using vulnerable ILIAS versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ILIAS to version 9.24, 10.12, or 11.5 or later immediately. Apply patches from the official ILIAS repository. Restrict Test creation and import permissions to trusted users only. Monitor for unauthorized file writes or code execution attempts.
