Description

Gitingest through 0.3.1 contains a symlink following vulnerability in ingest_query single-file blob ingestion that allows unauthenticated attackers to read server files by submitting symlink blob URLs. Attackers can commit a symlink to a public repository and submit its blob URL, causing the server to return any file the service user can read, up to 10 MB.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-110767 is a symlink following vulnerability in Gitingest through version 0.3.1. It allows unauthenticated attackers to read server files by submitting symlink blob URLs. Attackers can commit a symlink in a public repository and provide its blob URL, causing the server to return any file the service user can read, up to 10 MB.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your gitingest instance is running version 0.3.1 or earlier. Review server logs for suspicious single-file blob ingestion requests targeting paths like /etc/passwd or ../../../../etc/passwd. Inspect repositories for symlinks with git file mode 120000 pointing to absolute or traversal paths.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files on the server, including configuration files, credentials, or other confidential data. Attackers can read files up to 10 MB in size without authentication, potentially exposing cloud credentials, SSH keys, or application settings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files, potentially exposing personal data or protected health information. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. A breach via this flaw may violate compliance requirements, leading to legal and regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade gitingest to a patched version beyond 0.3.1. If upgrading is not possible, disable single-file blob ingestion by restricting access to the /blob/<ref>/<path> route. Add symlink detection in the blob ingestion branch to refuse symlinks, matching the directory walk guard. Implement path containment checks to prevent traversal.
