Description

n8n before 2.41.4 and 2.42.x before 2.42.1 contains an SQL injection vulnerability in version 1 of the Microsoft SQL node, which substitutes Query field expression values directly into SQL text without parameterisation. When a workflow binds untrusted input such as webhook fields to the Query field, unauthenticated external callers can execute arbitrary SQL against the connected database with the stored credential's privileges.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL injection flaw in n8n versions before 2.41.4 and 2.42.x before 2.42.1. It specifically affects version 1 of the Microsoft SQL node where untrusted input from fields like webhooks is directly inserted into SQL queries without proper parameterization. This allows unauthenticated external attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands against the database using the stored credentials' privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check if your n8n instance is running a vulnerable version (before 2.41.4 or 2.42.x before 2.42.1) by running: n8n --version. Inspect workflows using the Microsoft SQL node version 1 for untrusted input binding to the Query field.

Impact Analysis

If you use n8n with the vulnerable Microsoft SQL node, attackers could access or manipulate your database contents. This includes unauthorized data retrieval, modification, or deletion. The impact depends on the database permissions, potentially leading to data breaches or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access or exposure. GDPR requires protection against data breaches, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for sensitive health data. Exploitation may result in regulatory penalties, legal consequences, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade n8n to version 2.41.4 or 2.42.1 or later. Review and update workflows using the Microsoft SQL node to avoid direct untrusted input in the Query field. Use parameterized queries instead of direct substitution.
