Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in n8n versions before 1.123.83, 2.x before 2.41.4, and 2.42.x before 2.42.1. It occurs in the Chat Trigger hosted-chat page where customCss values are not properly sanitized, allowing malicious code to be executed in the context of the n8n instance.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect n8n instances for unauthenticated chat triggers with customCss values containing executable scripts. Check workflows published without authentication for malicious payloads in the Chat Trigger hosted-chat page. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browser of signed-in users visiting the affected page. This could lead to session hijacking, data theft, or unauthorized actions performed on behalf of users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows execution of malicious scripts on the instance origin, potentially enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data processed by n8n workflows. This could lead to violations of GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) by exposing personal or protected health information during workflow execution.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update n8n to version 1.123.83, 2.41.4, or 2.42.1 or later. Disable unauthenticated chat trigger publishing if not required. Review and remove any suspicious workflows or customCss values in existing chat triggers.
