Description

The Content Pilot – Autoblogging & Affiliate Marketing Suite plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting in versions up to, and including, 2.2.4. This is due to the plugin extracting the HTML meta description from each remotely-fetched article (WPCP_Readability::parse_meta()), piping that value through the article template substitution and html_entity_decode() in WPCP_Module::insert_post(), and then calling wp_insert_post() after switching the current user to the configured campaign author (an Administrator with the unfiltered_html capability by default) β€” so no wp_kses_post sanitization is applied to the attacker-controlled HTML before it is persisted as post_content and rendered on the front end. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers who control the content of any RSS source an administrator has configured a Content Pilot RSS campaign to consume to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Content Pilot WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages by exploiting how the plugin processes HTML meta descriptions from remotely fetched articles. The plugin fails to sanitize user-controlled HTML before saving it as post content, which is then rendered on the front end.

Detection Guidance

Check for the vulnerable plugin version (up to 2.2.4) in WordPress installations. Inspect WordPress posts for unexpected scripts in content. Review RSS campaign configurations for unauthorized sources.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or deliver malware to visitors. Users accessing infected pages may have their data compromised or be redirected to malicious sites without their knowledge.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. Organizations may face fines or legal consequences if exploited, as it undermines data confidentiality and integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Content Pilot plugin to the latest version. Remove or disable the plugin if no update is available. Audit RSS campaign sources for unauthorized feeds. Monitor WordPress posts for injected scripts.
