Description

Ansilove libansilove through 1.4.2 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in ansilove_xbin() in src/loaders/xbin.c that lacks bounds checks for compressed run-length records. Attackers can supply a crafted compressed XBIN file ending in a control byte such as 0x7F to read past the input buffer, crashing applications that render untrusted XBIN art.

Executive Summary

Ansilove libansilove through version 1.4.2 has an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the ansilove_xbin() function. The issue occurs because the function lacks bounds checks for compressed run-length encoding (RLE) records in XBIN files. Attackers can exploit this by providing a maliciously crafted XBIN file ending with a control byte like 0x7F, causing the program to read past the allocated input buffer. This can crash applications processing untrusted XBIN artwork.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect systems using libansilove version 1.4.2 or earlier. Check for crashes when processing XBIN files, particularly those ending with control bytes like 0x7F. Monitor logs for out-of-bounds read errors in applications using libansilove for XBIN rendering.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause applications using libansilove to crash when processing untrusted XBIN files. The impact includes denial of service through application crashes. The severity depends on how the affected application handles memory, as the out-of-bounds read may lead to further instability or potential data exposure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes application crashes due to out-of-bounds reads, which may lead to denial-of-service conditions. It does not directly impact data confidentiality or integrity, so its effect on GDPR or HIPAA compliance is likely minimal unless the crashes disrupt critical processing of personal or health data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libansilove to the latest version beyond 1.4.2. If updating is not possible, restrict access to applications processing XBIN files or disable XBIN rendering functionality until patched. Monitor for crashes or unusual behavior in affected applications.
