Description

Game Music Emu (libgme) through 0.6.5 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the AY loader get_data function caused by an integer underflow in the track-table bounds check. Attackers can supply a crafted ZXAYEMUL file with an oversized track table to read past the file buffer via gme_track_info or gme_start_track, crashing libgme consumers.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap out-of-bounds read in the Game Music Emu library (libgme) through version 0.6.5. It occurs in the AY loader's get_data function due to an integer underflow in the track-table bounds check. Attackers can create a malicious ZXAYEMUL file with an oversized track table, causing libgme to read past the file buffer when processing the file via gme_track_info or gme_start_track, potentially crashing applications using the library.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is triggered by processing a crafted ZXAYEMUL file with an oversized track table. To detect it, inspect files processed by libgme for unusually large track tables or files with max_track values near 255. Use static analysis tools to check for integer underflow in bounds checks or monitor applications using libgme for crashes when loading AY files.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause applications relying on libgme to crash when processing specially crafted music files. It may lead to denial-of-service conditions or unexpected behavior in software that uses the library for emulating video game music. Users could experience application failures or system instability if the library is used in audio playback software.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it is a technical memory safety issue in a media emulation library. However, if exploited, it could lead to crashes or arbitrary code execution in applications using libgme, potentially compromising data integrity or availability. This may indirectly impact compliance if such applications handle sensitive data under GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Update libgme to a patched version if available. If not, restrict processing of untrusted AY files or implement strict file size and track table size validation before passing files to libgme. Disable or sandbox applications using libgme until patched.
