Description

libTiMidity through 0.2.8 contains a stack out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the SoundFont loader that allows attackers to corrupt stack memory via unchecked generator operators in parse_gen. Attackers can supply a crafted .sf2 file with out-of-range pgen/igen operator values to write chosen 16-bit values near the stack Layer object, causing crashes and stack memory corruption.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack out-of-bounds write flaw in libTiMidity version 0.2.8 and below. It occurs in the SoundFont loader's parse_gen function, where unchecked generator operators allow attackers to write chosen 16-bit values near the stack Layer object. By supplying a crafted .sf2 file with out-of-range pgen/igen operator values, attackers can corrupt stack memory, leading to crashes and potential code execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for vulnerable versions of libTiMidity. Use commands like 'find / -name libtimidity.so*' or 'ldconfig -p | grep libtimidity' to locate the library. Verify the version with 'strings [library_path] | grep -i version' or 'dpkg -l | grep libtimidity' on Debian-based systems. If version 0.2.8 or below is found, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause application crashes or memory corruption when processing malicious SoundFont files. On systems without stack protections like canaries or ASLR, it may allow arbitrary code execution. The attack requires only a specially crafted .sf2 file and no special tools.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily affects software integrity and availability by allowing stack memory corruption through crafted SoundFont files. While it does not directly expose personal data, it could enable denial-of-service attacks or arbitrary code execution in vulnerable applications. Compliance impact depends on the system's role: for systems handling sensitive data under GDPR or HIPAA, such vulnerabilities could violate integrity and availability requirements if exploited, potentially leading to unauthorized access or data corruption.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libTiMidity to the latest version beyond 0.2.8. If an update is unavailable, disable SoundFont support in applications using libTiMidity by removing or restricting access to .sf2 files. Monitor for crashes or memory corruption errors in MIDI processing applications.
