Description

libTiMidity through 0.2.8 contains an out-of-bounds access vulnerability in init_soundfont() in src/sndfont.c that allows attackers to corrupt memory by supplying unvalidated SF2 preset header bank and preset values. Attackers can craft a .sf2 file whose bank or preset indexes past the 128-entry tonebank or drumset arrays, causing heap memory reads, writes, and application crashes.

Executive Summary

libTiMidity through 0.2.8 has an out-of-bounds access vulnerability in init_soundfont() in src/sndfont.c. Attackers can exploit this by supplying unvalidated SF2 preset header bank and preset values. If a crafted .sf2 file contains bank or preset indexes exceeding the 128-entry tonebank or drumset arrays, it causes heap memory corruption, leading to reads, writes, and application crashes.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires analyzing .sf2 files for invalid bank or preset indexes. Inspect files for values exceeding 128 in tonebank or drumset arrays. Use tools like hex editors to examine SF2 file structures or write scripts to parse preset headers.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to application crashes, memory corruption, and potential arbitrary code execution if exploited. Attackers could leverage it to disrupt services or gain unauthorized access to affected systems by crafting malicious .sf2 files.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA. However, if exploited, it could lead to application crashes or memory corruption, potentially causing data processing interruptions or loss of availability. This might indirectly impact compliance if it affects systems handling sensitive data under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update libTiMidity to a patched version beyond 0.2.8. Avoid processing untrusted .sf2 files. Implement input validation for SF2 files to reject those with bank or preset indexes exceeding 128.
