Description

libmikmod through 3.3.15 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the IMF_Load() loader that allows attackers to read beyond allocated memory by supplying a crafted IMF module. Attackers can enable the linear-period header flag and map notes to out-of-range samples, causing noteindex indexing far past the heap allocation and crashing applications that load the file.

Executive Summary

This is a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in libmikmod through version 3.3.15. It occurs in the IMF_Load() loader when processing crafted IMF module files. Attackers enable a linear-period header flag and map notes to invalid samples, causing noteindex to exceed heap memory limits. This leads to reading beyond allocated memory and potential application crashes.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires analyzing libmikmod versions and IMF file processing. Check installed libmikmod version with 'dpkg -l libmikmod3' or 'rpm -qa | grep libmikmod'. Monitor applications using libmikmod for crashes when processing IMF files. Use fuzz testing tools like AFL or libFuzzer with IMF file inputs to identify out-of-bounds reads.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash applications that load malicious IMF files. While it may not directly execute arbitrary code, the out-of-bounds read could expose sensitive memory or cause instability in software using libmikmod for audio playback.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily affects data integrity and availability by enabling out-of-bounds memory reads, which could lead to crashes or potential data leaks. While not directly violating GDPR or HIPAA, such vulnerabilities may compromise systems handling sensitive data, indirectly impacting compliance if exploited to access or expose protected information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libmikmod to version 3.3.16 or later. Disable IMF file processing in applications if not required. Implement input validation for IMF files by checking module header fields like ordnum, patnum, and insnum. Use sandboxing or containerization for applications processing IMF files to limit impact of potential exploits.
