Description

Netgate pfSense CE 2.7.0 through 2.9.0 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users with Traffic Shaper Limiters privileges to execute root commands by tampering with the limiter number field. Attackers can submit a malicious hidden 'number' value when editing a limiter, then delete it so delete_queue() passes the unquoted value to dnctl via /bin/sh as root.

Executive Summary

This is an OS command injection vulnerability in Netgate pfSense CE versions 2.7.0 through 2.9.0. It allows authenticated users with Traffic Shaper Limiters privileges to execute root commands by manipulating the limiter number field. Attackers can submit a malicious hidden 'number' value when editing a limiter, then delete it so the system passes the unquoted value to dnctl via /bin/sh as root.

Detection Guidance

Check pfSense logs for unusual activity in the Traffic Shaper Limiters section. Look for commands executed via /bin/sh or dnctl. Inspect shaper.inc for improper input handling in limiter number fields. Monitor for unauthorized root shell access or unexpected system changes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with access to the WebGUI's Traffic Shaper Limiters page can execute arbitrary commands as root. This could lead to full system compromise, allowing attackers to take control of the pfSense device, access sensitive data, or disrupt network services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements such as GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information security). Unauthorized root access may result in data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or disclosure of regulated information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade pfSense to a patched version if available. Disable Traffic Shaper Limiters privileges for non-admin users. Monitor for suspicious limiter deletions or edits. Apply input validation patches to shaper.inc if custom fixes are needed.
