Description

The W3 Total Cache plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.10.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that a Pro license was previously active with REST caching enabled and has since become inactive while Disk Enhanced page caching remains configured, and that the attacker holds a previously approved commenter identity.

Executive Summary

The W3 Total Cache plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 2.10.7. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'comment' parameter. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages, which execute when users access those pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious comments in WordPress pages or posts that contain unexpected scripts. Review cached files for HTML extensions storing REST API responses. Use WordPress admin tools to inspect active caching settings and license status.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. If exploited, it could lead to unauthorized actions on behalf of users, theft of sensitive data, or defacement of websites. Users visiting an infected page may have their sessions compromised.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially affect compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling stored cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks. If exploited, attackers could inject malicious scripts into web pages, which may lead to unauthorized data access, manipulation, or disclosure. This could violate GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if user data is compromised.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update W3 Total Cache to the latest version to apply security patches.
  • Disable Disk Enhanced page caching if REST caching was previously enabled with a Pro license.
  • Flush all cached files and disable caching for REST API responses.
  • Review and remove any unauthorized comments or scripts from your site.
