Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a missing authorization issue in the 10up Distributor WordPress plugin before version 2.3.2. It allows Contributor-level users on a multisite network to publish posts on other network sites without proper permissions. Attackers exploit this by using a specific nonce and manipulating connection IDs and post status to create drafts or published posts on sites they cannot access.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Distributor plugin version is below 2.3.2. Inspect network traffic for AJAX requests to dt-push with nonces and postStatus parameters. Review logs for unauthorized post creation across network sites.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthorized users to create or modify posts on sites they should not have access to. This could lead to content manipulation, misinformation, or unauthorized publishing of sensitive information. The impact is higher in multisite WordPress installations where users have limited roles on some sites but elevated roles on others.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized users to create or modify posts on network sites without proper authorization. For GDPR, this may lead to unauthorized data processing or disclosure if sensitive content is involved. For HIPAA, it could result in improper handling of protected health information if posts contain such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade the Distributor plugin to version 2.3.2 or later immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if an upgrade is not possible. Review all network sites for unauthorized posts and revoke any suspicious user access.
