Executive Summary

CVE-2026-111935 is a local file disclosure vulnerability in NoteGen versions up to 0.38.3. It occurs in the chat image analysis feature where unvalidated file paths allow attackers with write access to a victim's sync target to read local image files. Attackers can insert absolute paths or file:// URLs, causing the system to send local images to an AI provider.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect NoteGen's chat image analysis feature for improperly validated file paths. Check logs for file:// URLs or absolute paths in attachment URLs. Review synchronization logs for untrusted conversation data imports. Look for unauthorized file reads in application directories.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to access sensitive local files, such as images containing personal or confidential information, by exploiting improper file path validation during chat image analysis. If exploited, it may lead to unauthorized data exposure to external AI providers.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to local files, potentially exposing sensitive data such as personally identifiable information (PII) or protected health information (PHI). This may violate GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements if such data is transmitted to external AI providers without proper safeguards.

Mitigation Strategies

Update NoteGen to the latest version with path validation fixes. Disable chat image analysis if not needed. Restrict write access to sync targets. Monitor for suspicious file:// URLs or absolute paths in attachment URLs. Review synchronization logs for anomalies.
