Description

Sigma File Manager through 2.2.0 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability because validate_remote_url() in security.rs never checks resolved IP addresses for extension download commands. A malicious extension or catalog entry can use hostnames resolving to loopback, private, or cloud metadata addresses to read internal responses via files written to the extension directory.

Executive Summary

Sigma File Manager through 2.2.0 has a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in the validate_remote_url() function. This flaw allows a malicious extension or catalog entry to bypass IP address checks when downloading extensions. By using hostnames that resolve to loopback, private, or cloud metadata addresses, attackers can force the application to read internal responses and write files to the extension directory.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SSRF vulnerability in Sigma File Manager, monitor network traffic for outbound requests to loopback, private, or cloud metadata addresses (e.g., 127.0.0.1, 192.168.x.x, 169.254.169.254). Check extension directories for unexpected files written by the application. Use tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to capture suspicious DNS resolutions or HTTP requests to internal IPs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to access internal network resources or sensitive data by tricking the application into making unauthorized requests. If exploited, it may lead to data leaks, unauthorized file access, or further compromise of the system hosting Sigma File Manager.

Compliance Impact

This SSRF vulnerability could potentially violate GDPR by enabling unauthorized access to internal systems or cloud metadata services, leading to unauthorized data exposure. For HIPAA, it may allow access to internal network resources that could contain protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Sigma File Manager to the latest version beyond 2.2.0 to address the server-side request forgery vulnerability in extension downloads.
