CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL injection flaw in the Online-Examination-System. It exists in the Exam::startExam function of the exam.php file, specifically in the Exam Module. The issue arises when the topicid argument is manipulated, allowing attackers to inject malicious SQL code. The attack can be executed remotely, and the exploit is already public.

Detection Guidance

To detect SQL injection vulnerabilities in the Online-Examination-System, inspect HTTP requests to exam.php for improperly sanitized topicid parameters. Look for patterns like single quotes, semicolons, or SQL keywords (e.g., UNION, SELECT) in the topicid value. Use tools like sqlmap to test for injection points.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to access or modify sensitive data stored in the database, such as exam questions, user credentials, or personal information. It may also enable unauthorized changes to the system, leading to disruptions in the examination process or data integrity issues.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows SQL injection via the topicid argument in exam.php, which could lead to unauthorized data access or manipulation. This may violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if exam data includes such details. Unauthorized access risks non-compliance with confidentiality and integrity principles.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Online-Examination-System to the latest version if available. If no patch exists, disable the Exam Module or restrict access to exam.php. Implement input validation for topicid to reject non-numeric values. Use prepared statements in the PHP code to prevent SQL injection.
