Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Diem project's Link Widget. User-controlled input in the text field is inserted into HTML without proper escaping, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts. The flaw exists because the widget treats input as HTML and directly renders it in the anchor element's body.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized script execution in link widgets by inspecting HTML output for unescaped user input in dmBaseLinkTag.php and related files. Look for tags like <script> or event handlers (e.g., onerror) in link text fields.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with widget editing privileges can inject JavaScript into the link text field. When the page is viewed, the script executes in the user's browser, enabling actions like manipulating page content, performing same-origin requests, reading session data, or presenting phishing interfaces.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability enables stored cross-site scripting (XSS), allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages. Such attacks can compromise user sessions, steal sensitive data, or manipulate content, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protecting health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable widget editing privileges for untrusted users. Apply HTML escaping to user-controlled input in dmBaseLinkTag.php and related files. Replace nl2br() with a sanitization function before rendering link text.
