Description

A security flaw has been discovered in sgl-project SGLang up to 0.5.19. Affected is the function WeightExporter.send_weights_to_remote_instance of the file python/sglang/srt/model_executor/model_runner_components/weight_exporter.py of the component Weight Exporter. Performing a manipulation of the argument group_name results in denial of service. The attack can be initiated remotely. The exploit has been released to the public and may be used for attacks. The pull request to fix this issue awaits acceptance.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a denial of service flaw in the SGLang framework up to version 0.5.19. It exists in the WeightExporter.send_weights_to_remote_instance function where manipulating the group_name argument causes the system to crash. The issue stems from improper handling of missing or invalid group names in the weight export process.

Detection Guidance

Check for crashes or errors in SGLang logs when accessing the /send_weights_to_remote_instance endpoint with an invalid group_name. Monitor for KeyError exceptions in python/sglang/srt/model_executor/model_runner_components/weight_exporter.py.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could remotely trigger this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted request to the affected endpoint. This would cause the server to crash, leading to service disruption. The attack does not require authentication as the endpoint is accessible with ADMIN_OPTIONAL privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling denial-of-service attacks that disrupt services handling sensitive data. GDPR requires availability of personal data processing systems, while HIPAA mandates reliable access to protected health information. A DoS condition may violate these requirements by causing service disruptions.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the pending pull request fix to use dict.get() for safe group access. Temporarily restrict access to the /send_weights_to_remote_instance endpoint until patched. Monitor for unusual server shutdowns or errors related to weight export operations.
