Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SourceCodester Inventory System 1.0. It allows an attacker to inject malicious scripts via unsanitized input fields like Product_Name, Product_Code, and Vendor_Name when saving a purchase. These scripts are stored in the database and executed in users' browsers when they view purchase records.

Detection Guidance

To detect this XSS vulnerability, inspect the /api/transactions_handler.php endpoint for unsanitized input handling in Product_Name, Product_Code, and Vendor_Name parameters. Check if user inputs are reflected in pages like purchases.php without proper encoding. Use browser developer tools to inspect network requests and responses for stored malicious scripts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, hijack accounts, access sensitive data like PII or financial records, or modify/delete data. Even low-privilege users can exploit this to gain unauthorized access to admin functions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy). Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement strict input validation and sanitization for Product_Name, Product_Code, and Vendor_Name parameters. Ensure DataTables uses text escaping instead of innerHTML. Set the HttpOnly flag on session cookies. Apply server-side output encoding in PHP templates to prevent script execution.
