Description

A vulnerability was detected in AXA Group NLP.js 4.27.0. This impacts the function Evaluator.walkFunction of the file packages/evaluator/src/evaluator.js of the component Condition Expression Pipeline. The manipulation of the argument condition results in code injection. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploit is now public and may be used. The project was informed of the problem early through an issue report but has not responded yet.

CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
CWE-94 The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a code injection flaw in AXA Group NLP.js 4.27.0. It exists in the Evaluator.walkFunction of evaluator.js, specifically in the Condition Expression Pipeline. The issue allows attackers to inject malicious code via the condition argument, leading to remote code execution. The vulnerability arises because condition expressions are compiled using JavaScript's Function() constructor in the global scope after a permissive precheck pass.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious model.nlp files containing condition expressions that use Node.js globals like process. Review logs for unexpected code execution during model loading. Use the provided PoC files to test if your system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on systems running the affected NLP.js library. This may lead to unauthorized data access, system compromise, or further network infiltration. The attack can be triggered remotely by supplying a maliciously crafted model file via the train()/save() API.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or system manipulation, which may violate GDPR (data protection), HIPAA (health data security), or other compliance standards. Organizations using the affected library may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to non-compliance with data protection requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid loading untrusted model.nlp files. Update nlp.js to a patched version if available. Implement strict input validation for condition expressions. Disable automatic model loading from untrusted sources.
