CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an unauthenticated SQL injection in the Events-Management-System. It exists in the doedit.php file where user input from parameters like id, name, title, year, gender, fromdate, todate, and people is directly used in SQL queries without proper sanitization. Attackers can manipulate these inputs to execute arbitrary SQL commands, potentially modifying or accessing the entire registration database.

Detection Guidance

Check for unusual database activity or errors in logs related to doedit.php. Monitor for slow queries or unexpected changes in registration data. Use tools like sqlmap to test for SQL injection in the Events-Management-System by sending crafted GET/POST requests to doedit.php with parameters like id, name, title, or year.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read, modify, or delete all registration data in the system. This includes sensitive information like names, titles, dates, and other personal details. The attack requires no authentication and can be performed remotely via web requests, making it highly dangerous for exposed systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting personal and health data. Unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data could lead to legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust. Organizations using this system may face compliance violations if the vulnerability is exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict access to doedit.php or disable the registration-edit handler if possible. Apply input validation and sanitization to all user-supplied parameters in doedit.php. Use prepared statements with parameterized queries instead of direct SQL string interpolation. Monitor database activity for suspicious queries or unauthorized changes.
