CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an unauthenticated SQL injection in the Criminal-Management-System. It exists in the file Officers/searchOff.php where user input from the 'Search' parameter is directly inserted into SQL queries without sanitization. Attackers can manipulate these queries to access or modify sensitive data like officer records or credentials.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, monitor network traffic for suspicious POST requests to the Officers/searchOff.php endpoint. Look for requests containing SQL keywords like UNION, SELECT, or -- in the 'Search' parameter. Use tools like sqlmap to test for injection by sending payloads such as ' OR 1=1 -- or ' UNION SELECT 1,2,3 --.

Check application logs for repeated failed login attempts or unusual database queries. Inspect the Criminal-Management-System codebase for direct use of mysqli_query with user input without sanitization.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to dump sensitive data such as officer records or user credentials. They may also execute unauthorized commands on the database, leading to data breaches or system compromise. The attack can be performed remotely without authentication.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to personal data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguards for sensitive health information. A breach could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately disable the Officers/searchOff.php endpoint if possible. Apply input validation to sanitize the 'Search' parameter, using prepared statements or parameterized queries instead of direct mysqli_query calls.

Update to the latest version of Criminal-Management-System if a patch is available. Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block SQL injection attempts. Restrict database user permissions to limit damage from potential exploits.
