CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL injection flaw in the Criminal-Management-System. It exists in the Officers/addOfficer.php file, specifically in the mysqli_error function. Attackers can manipulate input fields like offName, offID, ID, contact, gender, weapon, or role to inject malicious SQL code. The flaw allows remote attackers to execute unauthorized database commands.

Detection Guidance

To detect SQL injection vulnerabilities in the Criminal-Management-System, inspect the Officers/addOfficer.php file for improper input validation in the mysqli_error function. Check for direct inclusion of user-supplied parameters like offName, offID, ID, contact, gender, weapon, or role in SQL queries without sanitization.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to steal, modify, or delete sensitive data from the database. They might access confidential information like officer records, personal details, or case files. The public exploit increases the risk of real-world attacks. Systems using this software could face data breaches or operational disruptions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. GDPR mandates strict controls against unauthorized data access, while HIPAA requires safeguards for protected health information. A breach could lead to legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage for affected organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Criminal-Management-System to the latest version if available. If no update exists, disable the Officer Registration Form or restrict access to it. Implement input validation and use prepared statements for all SQL queries. Monitor network traffic for suspicious SQL patterns targeting Officers/addOfficer.php.
