Description

A weakness has been identified in MemTensor memmy-agent up to 1.0.9/1.1.1/1.2.2. The impacted element is the function requireAdminWrite of the file Memory/src/server/http.ts of the component Memory Service. This manipulation causes resource consumption. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. The attack is considered to have high complexity. The exploitability is regarded as difficult. The exploit has been made available to the public and could be used for attacks. The exploit is partially overstated. While "POST /api/v1/admin/shutdown" accepts unauthenticated requests when no token is configured, it’s designed for local use and later received cross-origin fixes. Unauthenticated endpoint exposure is confirmed; browser-triggered DoS remains likely but depends on specific browser behavior.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in MemTensor memmy-agent versions up to 1.0.9/1.1.1/1.2.2. It involves the function requireAdminWrite in Memory/src/server/http.ts of the Memory Service component. The issue allows resource consumption through unauthenticated requests to the POST /api/v1/admin/shutdown endpoint when no token is configured. While designed for local use, the endpoint was exposed to cross-origin requests, enabling potential denial-of-service attacks via browser behavior.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Memory Service is running on http://127.0.0.1:18960 by using curl or a browser. Test for unauthenticated access by sending a POST request to /api/v1/admin/shutdown. If the service responds or shuts down, the vulnerability may be present.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause resource consumption, leading to degraded performance or downtime of the memmy-agent service. Since the endpoint is exposed to unauthenticated requests, remote attackers may trigger denial-of-service conditions, particularly if browser-based interactions are involved. However, exploit complexity is high and requires specific conditions.

Mitigation Strategies

Configure a token for the Memory Service to enforce authentication. Restrict CORS policies to prevent cross-origin requests. Update to the latest version of memmy-agent where the issue may be fixed.
