Description

GitLab has remediated an issue in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions from 18.3 before 19.3.6, 19.4 before 19.4.3, and 19.5 before 19.5.1 that, under certain conditions, an unauthenticated user could have poisoned a shared cache's OAuth/OIDC discovery document to redirect certain flows to an externally controlled server, due to improper trust of user-supplied values when constructing endpoint URLs in cached discovery responses.

CWE ID Description
CWE-444 The product acts as an intermediary HTTP agent (such as a proxy or firewall) in the data flow between two entities such as a client and server, but it does not interpret malformed HTTP requests or responses in ways that are consistent with how the messages will be processed by those entities that are at the ultimate destination.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in GitLab CE/EE allows an unauthenticated user to poison a shared cache's OAuth/OIDC discovery document. This could redirect certain flows to an attacker-controlled server by manipulating endpoint URLs in cached responses due to improper trust of user-supplied values.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could intercept sensitive authentication data, such as OAuth tokens, by redirecting users to a malicious server. This may lead to unauthorized access to user accounts or data, depending on the affected GitLab instance's configuration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Compliance may be compromised if user data is exposed or mishandled due to the attack.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GitLab to a patched version: 19.3.6, 19.4.3, or 19.5.1 or later to address the OAuth/OIDC discovery document cache poisoning issue.
