Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a path traversal issue in GrandNode2 up to version 2.3.0. It occurs in the Excel Import feature, specifically in the ProductImportDataObject.PrepareProductPictures function. Attackers can manipulate Picture1, Picture2, or Picture3 arguments to access arbitrary files on the server by exploiting unrestricted file path handling. The vendor fixed this in version 2.4.0 by restricting image imports to HTTP/HTTPS URLs only.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your GrandNode2 instance is running version 2.3.0 or earlier. Inspect Excel import logs for attempts to access local files or internal endpoints via Picture1/Picture2/Picture3 parameters. Monitor network traffic for unusual outbound requests from the server to internal hosts or cloud metadata endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could read sensitive files on the server, including configuration files, source code, or other confidential data. They might also make the server request internal endpoints or cloud metadata services, potentially leading to data exfiltration or further network compromise. The impact depends on server permissions and exposed data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GrandNode2 to version 2.4.0 immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict Picture1/Picture2/Picture3 parameters to only accept HTTP/HTTPS URLs from trusted public hosts. Block internal host access in firewall rules and disable unrestricted HttpClient usage in image imports.
