Executive Summary

This vulnerability in GIMP occurs when a crafted XCF file with a malformed text-layer parasite is opened. It causes a heap out-of-bounds read, which allows adjacent heap data to be disclosed into the layer text. This can lead to denial of service and information disclosure.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for crashes or unusual behavior when opening XCF files in GIMP. Check GIMP logs for heap out-of-bounds read errors or crashes when processing text-layer parasites. Use system monitoring tools to detect GIMP crashes or memory leaks during file operations.

Impact Analysis

If you open a malicious XCF file, this flaw could expose sensitive data like cryptographic keys or memory addresses. It may also cause GIMP to crash, leading to denial of service. Users are advised to avoid opening untrusted files.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts confidentiality and availability by exposing heap data and causing denial of service. For GDPR, it could lead to unauthorized disclosure of personal data if sensitive information is leaked from memory. HIPAA compliance may be affected if protected health information is exposed through the heap out-of-bounds read. The denial of service aspect could disrupt systems handling sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid opening untrusted XCF files in GIMP. If GIMP is unused, remove the gimp package to eliminate exposure. Monitor for vendor-provided patches and apply them when available. Use file integrity monitoring to detect suspicious XCF files.
