Description

Television (tv) 0.15.0 through 0.15.9 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to run shell commands through improperly escaped single quotes in format_command. Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an OS command injection flaw in the television application versions 0.15.0 through 0.15.9. It occurs because single quotes in filenames are not properly escaped when formatting commands. Attackers can create a file with an apostrophe in its name, which breaks out of single-quoted strings in shell commands. This allows execution of arbitrary shell commands with the victim's privileges when actions like editing files are triggered.

Detection Guidance

Check for installed versions of the television application between 0.15.0 and 0.15.9. Inspect file names in directories accessed by the application for crafted names containing apostrophes. Review command execution logs for unexpected shell commands triggered by file interactions.

Impact Analysis

If you use television versions 0.15.0 to 0.15.9, an attacker could trick you into interacting with a malicious file. By planting a file with an apostrophe in its name, they can execute arbitrary commands on your system with your privileges. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network attacks depending on your environment.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade the television application to a version beyond 0.15.9 where the vulnerability is fixed. Avoid using versions 0.15.0 through 0.15.9. Remove any files with crafted names containing apostrophes from directories accessed by the application.
