Description

Libdisplay-info 0.4.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the DisplayID v2 section parser in displayid2.c that allows attackers to read past the EDID buffer via oversized data block lengths. Attackers can supply a crafted EDID from a malicious monitor, KVM, capture device, or file to over-advance the parse cursor and crash applications.

Executive Summary

Libdisplay-info 0.4.0 has a heap out-of-bounds read flaw in the DisplayID v2 section parser. The issue occurs when parsing oversized data block lengths in the DisplayID v2 section. Attackers can exploit this by providing a maliciously crafted EDID from a compromised monitor, KVM, capture device, or file. This causes the parser to advance beyond the allocated EDID buffer, leading to crashes in applications.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect systems using libdisplay-info 0.4.0 or affected applications. Check for crashes or memory corruption when processing EDID data from monitors, KVM switches, or capture devices. Monitor logs for heap out-of-bounds read errors. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could cause applications relying on libdisplay-info to crash when processing a specially crafted EDID. If exploited via a malicious monitor or file, it may lead to denial-of-service conditions or potential information disclosure if sensitive data is read from memory.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by potentially exposing sensitive data through heap out-of-bounds reads. If exploited, attackers could access memory beyond the EDID buffer, potentially leaking confidential information processed by applications using libdisplay-info. This could violate data protection requirements under GDPR (e.g., Article 32 security of processing) and HIPAA (e.g., safeguards for protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Update libdisplay-info to the latest version to patch the heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the DisplayID v2 section parser. Avoid using untrusted EDID sources from monitors, KVMs, or capture devices.
