Description

VideoLAN libbluray through 1.5.1 contains an uncontrolled memory allocation vulnerability in _parse_extent_start_points() in clpi_parse.c that trusts the num_point field without bounds checking. Attackers can supply a crafted .clpi file on a disc, image, or directory with a huge num_point to exhaust memory and CPU, causing denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an uncontrolled memory allocation issue in VideoLAN libbluray versions up to 1.5.1. It occurs in the _parse_extent_start_points() function in clpi_parse.c where the num_point field is trusted without proper bounds checking. Attackers can exploit this by providing a specially crafted .clpi file containing an excessively large num_point value, leading to memory and CPU exhaustion, which causes a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is triggered by processing a crafted .clpi file with a huge num_point value. To detect it, inspect media files (discs, images, or directories) for suspicious .clpi files. Use file integrity monitoring tools to check for unexpected changes in libbluray-related files or processes consuming excessive memory.

Impact Analysis

If you use VideoLAN libbluray to play media files or discs, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability by tricking you into opening a malicious .clpi file. This could cause your system to run out of memory and CPU resources, leading to crashes or unresponsiveness. The impact is primarily a denial of service on the affected system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes denial of service by exhausting system resources, which may indirectly impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA by disrupting availability of systems processing personal or sensitive data. However, the CVE itself does not directly reference compliance impacts.

Mitigation Strategies

Update libbluray to the latest version (1.5.1 or later) to patch the uncontrolled memory allocation. Avoid using untrusted .clpi files or media sources. Monitor system resources for abnormal memory or CPU usage linked to libbluray processes.
