Description

NocoBase @nocobase/plugin-collection-sql through 2.2.28 contains an SQL injection vulnerability that allows privileged users to store unvalidated SQL by bypassing checkSQL() through the sqlCollection:setFields action. Attackers holding the collection-sql snippet can replace a benign collection query with dangerous statements executed on reload, reading pg_shadow password hashes or calling pg_read_file.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL injection flaw in NocoBase's @nocobase/plugin-collection-sql package up to version 2.2.28. It allows privileged users to bypass SQL validation by using the sqlCollection:setFields action, which does not call the checkSQL() function. Attackers can inject malicious SQL statements that execute when the collection is reloaded, potentially accessing sensitive data like pg_shadow password hashes or using functions like pg_read_file.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect NocoBase instances running plugin-collection-sql versions up to 2.2.28. Check for unauthorized SQL collections with suspicious queries containing dangerous keywords like pg_shadow, pg_read_file, or dblink. Review logs for setFields actions bypassing validation. Use database queries to list collections and their SQL definitions for anomalies.

Impact Analysis

If you are a privileged user of a vulnerable NocoBase instance, an attacker with the collection-sql privilege could exploit this to read sensitive database information, execute arbitrary SQL commands, or access restricted files. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or further system compromise depending on the database permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations using affected NocoBase versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update NocoBase to a patched version where setFields includes checkSQL() validation. Restrict privileges for pm.data-source-manager.collection-sql to trusted users only. Audit existing SQL collections for malicious SQL and remove unauthorized ones. Monitor database activity for unusual queries or data access patterns.
