Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

@rvf/set-get before 7.0.4 contains a prototype pollution vulnerability in setPath that allows unauthenticated attackers to overwrite properties of shared built-in functions via inherited Object.prototype methods. Attackers can submit a form field named hasOwnProperty.call through @rvf/core form parsing to replace the shared function property, causing process-wide denial of service until restart.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a prototype pollution flaw in the @rvf/set-get library before version 7.0.4. It exists in the setPath function, allowing unauthenticated attackers to overwrite properties of shared built-in functions via inherited Object.prototype methods. Attackers can submit a form field named hasOwnProperty.call through @rvf/core form parsing to replace shared function properties, causing a process-wide denial of service until the system restarts.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking if the installed version of @rvf/set-get is below 7.0.4. Use commands like 'npm list @rvf/set-get' or 'npm view @rvf/set-get version' to check the installed version.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial of service for systems using affected versions of @rvf/set-get. Attackers could crash applications or services relying on this library, disrupting normal operations. It may also allow unauthorized modification of application behavior if shared functions are overwritten.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update @rvf/set-get to version 7.0.4 or higher using 'npm update @rvf/set-get'. If updating is not possible, consider removing the package or implementing input validation to prevent prototype pollution attacks.
